I called myself a copywriter for over 3 years without knowing what it really was.

Back then I used to do regular blogs for companies/businesses and thought, (actually was pretty confident), that that was copywriting.

Not to say blogs do not fall under the wide umbrella of copywriting, but there are specific types of blogs that can be classified under that.

So what makes them different? And what can we call copywriting?

For content to qualify as copywriting, it has to drive the reader towards a specific action, either to subscribe to a newsletter, purchase a product, try out a free sample, download a document, among many other calls to action.

Copywriting is persuasive and compelling, almost pushy, but in a very strategic way.

How is copywriting different from content writing

The main difference is content writing is a long shot game while copywriting is more instant.

Content writing seeks to educate the readers, and through that gain their trust or establish authority in the field.

Copywriting, on the other hand, is one directional and instant. While it also offers educational content, its intention is to convert the reader almost instantly to a subscriber, buyer, member etc.

Example

This blog can qualify as content writing, because all its doing is offering information. But if I were to add a call to action, eg, get in touch with me for quality copywriting services, (which I have now), then it becomes copywriting, because I am driving you towards a specific action.
